Cuprous iodide is composed of two elements, copper and iodine, which are abundant in reserves. It is a direct bandgap semiconductor (3.1 eV at room temperature) with a bandgap at the Brillouin center. It can be used as a non-electrode hole transport material for perovskite cells.
It is used as a catalyst in organic synthesis, cathode ray tube coating, cloud wave seeds, and HgI2 as a temperature indicator.
It can also be used as a catalyst to convert aromatic, heteroaryl and vinyl bromides into corresponding iodides, which are used in coupling reactions such as Suzuki, Steele, Sonohira, Heck and Ullmann reactions.
